Bayern stroll through preseason fixtures

On Saturday, Bayern strolled to a 15-1 victory against the Wildenau fan club

Pep Guardiola enjoyed a weekend full of goals (24) as his side managed two comprehensive victories in his first outing as Bayern Munich manager. Young starlets Patrick Weihrauch and Julian Green were the stand out performers.

On Saturday, Bayern strolled to a 15-1 victory against the Wildenau fan club. The young, attacking midfielder Weihrauch impressed with four second-half goals.

Guardiola experimented with the usual 4-3-2-1 formation, the bulky 3-3-3-1, with the two fullbacks pushing on, and a 4-1-4-1 formation that saw Franck Ribery, who played two separate sets of 45 minutes, once in attack and once on his preferred wing.

Bayern’s youngest ever Bundesliga player Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was the only player to play the full game on Saturday as Guardiola gave nearly all of his squad (Mario Gomez was unable to play due to a training injury) the chance to impress.

Patrick Weihrauch and American-German striker Julian Green took their opportunity to do just that, combing for seven goals in forty second-half minutes in the first fixture.

Within 24 hours, Bayern were back on the pitch and the combination of Weihrauch and Green proved clinical again. Taking on TSV Regen, Weihrauch bagged two before being subbed off at the break, leaving Green to pick up a hat trick.

Emre Can was preferred in his more natural defensive midfield role and Bayern found themselves leading 3-1 at the break. Guardiola rung the changes once more and it proved fruitful as another six goals followed in the second half. Aside from Green’s goalscoring antics, Can and Toni Kroos also got in on the act as Bayern ran out 9-1 winners.

Bayern now have a rest day before another week’s training. Next Friday, July 5th, sees the Paulaner XI (locally selected footballers) take on Bayern in another long-standing preseason fixture. More goals will be expected there too. It’s almost as if last season never finished…
