Thomas Muller scored a hat-trick as Bayern Munich overcame a brave fourth-division BSV SW Rehden in the first round of the German Cup. After a subdued first half, Bayern opened up in the second half to coast to a 5-0 win.

As expected, Bayern dominated the early stages but it took them until the 18th minute before they opened the scoring. Bastian Schweinsteiger fed a through ball to David Alaba, who delivered a cross from the left. After some confusion in the box, Arjen Robben’s goal-bound effort was flicked in by Xherdan Shaqiri.

The hosts battled to keep Bayern’s score down and nearly scored a surprising equaliser when Alexander Neumann’s chip across goal had Manuel Neuer scrambling. Moments later, Robben’s low drive hit the post as Bayern reminded Rehden of their quality. Daniel van Buyten then tangled with Danny Arend in the box, but the referee opted against giving a penalty.

As the end of the first-half came to a close, Bayern added another goal as an unmarked Mueller headed in from close range after a short corner routine.

Rehden continued to impress after the break and it wasn’t until just before the hour mark that the signs of fatigue set in. Milos Mandic, the home side’s goalkeeper, made his first fantastic save to deny Mario Mandzukic. The goalkeeper spilled Alaba’s drive moments later, and as Mueller looked to put the rebound in, the attacker was fouled in the area. He stepped up to convert, before sealing his hat-trick, nodding in from a Robben corner.

Mandic once again saved from Mueller before van Buyten gifted Arend a glorious chance to score, but the midfielder skewed his effort wide of Neuer’s right-hand post. Mandzukic was denied by Mandic once more, as the goalkeeper then kept out Robben (twice) and Mueller. With time running out, substitute Jerome Boateng surged forward, before laying off to Mueller. His sensational turn was followed by a lay-off to his Dutch teammate, who curled in to complete the rout.
