Unexploded bomb disarmed in Munich

A 250-pound bomb was found on Tuesday morning in Munich. The explosive was discovered on a building plot on the corner of Hansjakobstrasse and Rosssteinstrasse in the Berg am Laim area. The bomb, an American World War II shell, was safely defused in the afternoon which allowed 1,000 people to return to their homes.

With the area evacuated on Tuesday, the bomb disposal unit worked on
disarming the bomb between 14:20 and 15:00 CET.

On Tuesday afternoon, people within a 600-metre radius of the area were temporarily evacuated. Along with the residential area, a school, two kindergartens and employees of three adjacent companies were all moved to safety.

A police spokesman said there was no need to fear any damage occurring to the area. In August 2012, things were not as simple in a different district of Munich. An unexploded bomb in Schwabing required a controlled explosion, damaging the surrounding area.

With the area evacuated on Tuesday, the bomb disposal unit worked on disarming the bomb between 14:20 and 15:00 CET. A regular inspection using satellite images led to the discovery and has also led to a number of further bombsites appearing.
