New Uniforms for Bavarian Police

Munich — 22 December 2013 — In 2016 the Bavarian police will get new uniforms to replace the old model.

The present uniform was created by fashion designer Heinz Oestergaard in 1972, and was then introduced in all Länder and then border patrol (now Bundespolizei), giving them a uniform appearance. In Germany the federal states are responsible for the police. Over the last years all other Länder already introduced new, but different, uniforms, and changed the color from green to blue.

Minister for the Interior, Joachim Herrmann (CSU), declared that next year, a test with 500 policemen and policewomen will be started. The main aim is to find a uniform with maximum comfort and high-tech material. The old uniforms are not breathable and water resistant. Police women, especially, are not happy with the design.

Hermann also pointed out there is no decision made yet which color the uniforms will have. The decision of the color, green or blue, will be made after the test, with participation of the 26,000 police officers.
