Direct from the Chair of Democrats Abroad Munich:

This month marks a bittersweet turn for our local Munich Chapter, as long-time Chapter Chair Meghan Driscoll decamps for Thailand. Over the last few years, Meghan has done an amazing, above-and-beyond job in making our local Bavarian arm of the Democratic Party a success. She’s worked tirelessly to increase membership, reach out to Democrats in Franken and Augsburg, put together a strong Get Out the Vote (GOTV) effort and bring our message to Germany through local marches.

21 June, Summer Biergarten! TONIGHT!!

18:30 Biergarten am Wienerplatz, Innere Wiener Straße 19, 81667 München

Come for a family-friendly time to enjoy the summer. We will be grabbing tables in the biergarten (look for a small American flag) to talk politics, have a beer or just enjoy the weather. Check out our Facebook page for up-to-the-minute information if it looks like it will rain.

I think what what goes unremarked is how much she has worked to balance the evolution of our organization in the age of Trump. Our core mission has always been to get Democrats abroad to vote in each election, and to serve as a voice to Congress for our unique issues. Since the election, Meghan has kept us true to this mission, while also giving local Americans a way to participate in the resistance back home. Of course you may be familiar with the Women’s Marches, March for Our Lives and vigils against the Muslim Ban – but she also made sure local members could participate in “smaller” ways like postcard and calling parties. Her dedication to our local chapter will be sorely missed.

Munich Democrats Abroad

Like Meghan, every person in Democrats Abroad is a volunteer. Our strength is determined by the hours and skills that every member — including you — can bring to the table. Our chapter is lucky in that we have many who are willing to help, but we are always looking for more volunteers to help us do more outreach. Whether you like calling local members, or holding down tables at biergartens, or managing social media, or making signs, or writing op eds, or even filling out German paperwork, we have a way for you to help!

I am a (sort of) recent volunteer. I moved to Munich from the USA in August 2016, and my first DA event was a vigil in early November 2016. Volunteering for Democrats Abroad, and the friendships I have made, has been the most rewarding part of living here. I hope that you find your membership as rewarding. Please do feel free to e-mail me if you have ideas for our chapter or are interested in getting more involved. As your interim chair, I will strive to keep things running smoothly until the next chair is elected in early 2019. In the coming months we will be focusing on the November elections, so every hand is needed!

And finally, a big thank you and herzliche Glückwünsche as Meghan embarks on her next adventure!Votefromabroad Logo

Are you registered?  Are you sure?

Americans living abroad do have to re-register every year. Just to go VoteFromAbroad.org.  It just takes a few minutes.  But then you’ll be all set for a year’s worth of primaries, special elections and the all-important mid-terms on November 6th when 33 senate seats, all 435 seats in the house of representatives, 14 Governorships and countless local offices will be UP FOR GRABS. Absentee ballots from abroad have already had a positive  effect on primary results so far. Let’s keep it up!

The best place to get answers for your own questions on overseas voting is the Voter’s section of our website. DA has an entire team devoted to helping you secure your rights to vote. Their Calendar of upcoming primaries is especially important right now.

If you want new blood, new ideas and new faces in our party, you MUST participate in the primaries! If you don’t vote, you can’t complain later. Primaries are happening NOW, so find out what’s going on in your state!

MunichNOW Democrats Abroad
MunichNOW Democrats Abroad There are as many as 7 million Americans living outside of the country

Throughout the spring and summer, we will be making a chapter-wide effort to get out into the parks, the beer gardens, town squares and into the streets. We will go wherever we might find our fellow Americans and help them register for upcoming primaries and the all-important mid-term elections in the fall.  This is why we need YOU to help us with the incredibly important task of reaching out to our American friends and neighbors!

Please take a look at what’s coming up this month and join us!

WHATS  ON  IN  MUNICH

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS WHEREVER YOU ARE!

Democrats Abroad is an all-volunteer organization. There are many jobs, large and small that need to be done to help our chapter thrive, and many of them can be done remotely and don’t even take much time.

Here are just a few ideas of ways you might consider volunteering:

  • Write articles for our website
  • Be our phone banking coordinator
  • Lead one of our caucuses or precincts
  • Help distribute our brochures at places where Americans hang out.
  • Hold a mini “activist meeting” in your own home or the neighbourhood pub.

If you would like to volunteer or would like more information,  please contact Mary Beth at DAG-Munich@democratsabroad.org  or update your DA profile at democratsabroad.org and be sure to check off “interested in volunteering” so that we can follow up.

Democratically yours,

Mary Beth Jowers
