MUNICH — (MunichNOW News) — According to recent reports from the Muenchen.de website, there is renewed interest in extending the existing pedestrian zone at the northern end of Sendlinger Straße all the way down to Sendlinger Tor.
The proposal calls for the temporary exclusion of vehicle traffic with modest street remodeling for the period of one year in order to test the feasability of the project. The test period could begin as soon as June or July of this year. At the end of the trial period, the Munich City Councel would rule on the final transformation.
The idea of the pedestrian-only conversion has been discussed for more than 30 years and the successful conversion of the northern part of the popular shopping street has brough renewed interest in the complete conversion.
Successful temporary closings for various public events and festivals have been met with positive comments from both pedestrians and local business owners. Also included in the proposed urban transformation are the Singlspielerstraße and the Schmidstraße.
