Munich – Special to MunichNOW –
Early this morning a huge truck made its way into Marienplatz with the 2014 Munich Christmas Tree securely strapped to an equally huge trailer. In short order the tree was set up and the trimming began in earnest.

The event was marked by a press reception right there in Marienplatz, complete with Bavarian snacks laid out on a long blue and white tablecloth, and dozens of photo and videographers jostling for the perfect shot of the 25.5 meter  (90 feet) tall tree. The huge 85 year-old tree was a gift from the Bavarian village of Kochel am See and the First Mayor of the town came to the city along with the tree to be part of the celebration. Erster Burgermeister (First Mayor) Thomas W. Holz was joined by Josef Schmid from the city of Munich in the short ceremony and press opportunity to mark the beginning of the Munich holiday season.

It will take two weeks to fully decorate the tree with more than 2,500 lights finishing just in time for the opening of the 2014 Munich Christkindlmarkt on 27 November at 5 PM. On 8 January 2015, the huge tree will have a second career as a Maibaum (Maypole) through the efforts of the Munich Fire Department.
